National Service Scheme (NSS)
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a prominent youth-oriented programme launched by the Government of India in 1969, commemorating the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. The scheme is run under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, GOI. The core objective of NSS is to develop the personality and character of students through community service, guided by the ideal of “Not Me, But You.” This motto reflects the essence of democratic living and emphasises the need for selfless service, social responsibility, and collective welfare. NSS provides an opportunity for students to actively participate in nation-building activities while pursuing their academic studies. The scheme aims to instil values such as discipline, leadership, cooperation, social harmony, and empathy towards marginalised and vulnerable sections of society. By engaging students in real-life social issues, NSS bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
Under the NSS, volunteers participate in a wide range of activities like educational awareness, cleanliness drives, tree plantation, health and hygiene awareness, blood donation camps, literacy programmes, gender sensitisation, environmental protection, disaster management, legal awareness, voter’s awareness, road safety and promotion of national integration and many more. In addition to this, a compulsory seven-day residential camp is organised in rural areas every year. Special emphasis is placed on working in adopted villages and urban slums, where volunteers interact closely with the rural community to understand local problems and contribute to sustainable solutions. NSS also plays a significant role in fostering national consciousness and civic responsibility among youth. Through regular activities and special residential camps, students are encouraged to develop a spirit of social service, respect for diversity, and commitment to constitutional values. Leadership training, personality development, and exposure to grassroots realities help volunteers grow into socially sensitive and responsible citizens.
The NSS Unit of Adv. Balasaheb Apte College of Law, established in 2019, is one of the very few law college NSS Units in Mumbai city. Headed by the Hon’ble I/c Principal, Dr Vaishali Gurav, and Programme Officer, Assistant. Prof. Vishal Shinde, the Unit consists of 100 sensitive and hardworking students, known as ‘NSS Volunteers’, led by two unit leaders.
In essence, NSS serves as a powerful platform for youth engagement, enabling students to contribute meaningfully to society while nurturing their own holistic development. By promoting voluntary service and community participation, NSS continues to play a vital role in shaping socially committed individuals and strengthening the fabric of the nation.
